Its roots trace back to a former Osram wire factory in East Berlin's Friedrichshain district, producing lamps on that site since 1912. After the war split Germany and split Osram along with it, the East Berlin plant continued from 1949 as VEB Berliner Glühlampenwerk "Rosa Luxemburg". The Narva trademark itself, the name built from the German words for nitrogen, argon, and vacuum, the gases and process behind the lamp technology, was first registered in 1957, originally for a sister plant supplying filament lamps for vehicles, railways, ships, scientific instruments, and film and theatre production. By 1969, the various Narva plants across the GDR merged into a single combine, becoming the country's central manufacturer of light sources, employing as many as 6,000 people in Berlin alone by the late 1970s. Spotlights like this one lit stages across East Germany at a time when Narva's name was essentially the only one on the socket.

The tripod beneath it tells an entirely different story. Ertel-Werk of Munich traced its own history back to 1802, to a precision workshop founded by Georg von Reichenbach and later carried forward under Traugott Ertel's name, building some of Germany's finest astronomical and surveying instruments for over a century, work exact enough that the company was called on to manufacture components for the Enigma cipher machine during the Second World War, before the factory turned fully to wartime production. This folding wooden field tripod, issued to the postwar Bundeswehr in West Germany, carries that same tradition of purpose-built precision, just aimed at open terrain rather than a workshop bench. An East German stage light and a West German army survey stand were never meant to end up together, a small, physical trace of a divided country now standing reunited as one floor lamp.

The spotlight's original beam-adjustment knob still works, shifting the light from a tight spot to a soft flood exactly as a stage technician would have used it. It has been fully rewired for safe home use, fitted with an E27 fitting, roughly 2 metres of electrical cord, and an EU plug, so it accepts any standard LED or incandescent bulb, the one shown in the photographs is included.

Suited to collectors of Eastern Bloc design and theatre lighting history, interior designers looking for a genuinely unusual statement piece, and anyone furnishing a designer interior who wants an object that carries an entire divided country's industrial history in one fixture.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0847/7029/2048/files/BlitzcraftVintage_Antiques_theatreandindustriallighting27Augustus2026_181van190.jpg?v=1787920795
