Philips HDK Factory Pendant Light 1950s - XXL Black Enamel Industrial Hang Lamp, Made in Holland - High top & Shade

There are factory lights, and then there are Philips factory lights. This is the HDK Series, one of the most recognised industrial pendant lamps ever produced in the Netherlands. At 53 centimetres in diameter and 80 centimetres in height, it does not go unnoticed. It was never designed to.

The object

Philips produced these pendant lamps in the 1950s for large-scale industrial environments: factories, warehouses, and production halls where serious illumination was a functional requirement. The HDK Series was their answer to that brief: cast aluminium construction, deep enamel shade, and a form that prioritised performance over ornament. The result, entirely by accident, became one of the defining silhouettes of mid-century Dutch industrial design.

The shade is original black enamel with a white interio, a deliberate engineering choice that maximised downward light distribution across large working surfaces. The aluminium top cap has been stripped and refinished in a satin black, creating a cohesive all-black exterior with the white enamel interior as the only reveal. The original heavy transformers have been removed, making the lamp significantly lighter and easier to install without compromising the lamp's proportions or profile.

Scale as a design statement

At this diameter, the HDK works hardest above a dining table, kitchen island, or restaurant counter where a smaller pendant would simply disappear. The depth of the shade creates a focused pool of light directly belo: functional, warm, and deliberate.
