The story

The Heraeus name behind this lamp carries a genuinely long history. The company traces back to 1660, when Isaac Heraeus took over a small pharmacy in Hanau, Germany, a business the family ran for generations. In 1851, Wilhelm Carl Heraeus turned that pharmacy's chemistry knowledge into an industrial venture, tackling a real problem for Hanau's jewellers: platinum was in growing demand but nearly impossible to melt and shape with the technology of the time. In 1856, after years of experimenting, Heraeus succeeded in melting platinum using a gas burner of his own design, founding what became known as the first German platinum smelter. From that starting point, the company grew into one of Germany's largest family-owned technology groups, still headquartered in Hanau today, with divisions spanning precious metals, medical technology, and precision instruments. The Hanaulux name itself reflects that hometown connection, Hanau plus "lux," light.

Lamps in the Hanaulux range, including the London model this piece began as, were built for exactly the kind of precision the Heraeus name had stood for since the nineteenth century: multiple lamp heads working together to cast light without shadow, giving surgeons a clear, even view of the operating field regardless of where their hands or instruments fell. That same engineering, built for absolute reliability under the most demanding conditions imaginable, is what gives this lamp its unusual, confident presence now that it lights a room instead of an operating table.

We mounted it on a large wooden Bundeswehr surveying tripod and refinished the whole piece in matte green, the original camouflage colour used on German army field equipment, a deliberate contrast between clinical precision and rugged military history. The original three blue glass lenses remain in place, a quiet reminder of exactly what this object used to do. The lamp has been fully rewired for home use, fitted with three G9 sockets and LED bulbs, roughly 3 metres of cord, a light switch, and an EU plug, and the whole fixture adjusts fully in height and angle.
