Few pieces of film equipment carry a nickname this good. The Mole Richardson 612 earned the name “Sputnik” on 1950s studio floors: a round fibreglass body on three splayed legs that looked, to the crews who worked with it, like the satellite that had just circled the earth.

The story

Peter Mole founded Mole-Richardson in Hollywood in 1927 and changed film lighting with the Fresnel “Solar Spot” of 1935. In 1936 the company opened a factory in England, where this 612 was built. This unit later worked for Bayerischer Rundfunk, Bavaria’s public broadcaster, and still wears its tags.

The restoration

We rewired the spotlight for everyday use and kept the original finish, barndoors and tags. It stands on its own three legs as well, so it also works without the stand on a floor or plinth.

In your interior

A centrepiece for a collector of film history, a restaurant or hotel lobby, or a designer interior that needs one object people ask about. Rarely does a 612 come with its own M&R rolling stand.
