The story
Nitrous Oxide Systems, NOS for short, was started in 1978 by Mike Thermos and Dale Vaznaian. Nitrous was not their invention, but they refined it into a reliable kit: a pressurised bottle that feeds nitrous oxide into the engine's intake, letting it burn more fuel and make more power on demand. Around the turn of the millennium the bottle became an icon of street racing and car tuning, made famous by The Fast and the Furious films and the game Need for Speed Underground 2. This lamp turns that shape into a piece of lighting, with a pressure gauge and a rotary knob for looks.
The restoration
The body of this lamp started life as an old fire extinguisher, which has been emptied and converted into the shape of a NOS bottle. What is different about this one is its shade. Instead of a regular lampshade it carries a custom shade made from a blue racing air filter, the cone-shaped power filter that performance engines use to breathe. Its blue matches the blue of the bottle, so the lamp looks like one piece. It is a part from the same world as the bottle, and it gives the lamp a recognisable shape and a soft, filtered light. The bottle sits in a bracket with two existing holes, so it works as a table lamp straight away, or you can drill two holes in the wall and hang it. We wired the lamp by hand with an E14 fitting, approx. 2 m of cord, a switch and an EU plug. It is an empty converted extinguisher, not a working nitrous tank.
