There is a reason people call it the Pig Nose. One look at the front of the Strand Electric Patt 23 and the nickname needs no explanation. This is one of the most recognisable stage spotlights ever produced in Britain and this one has been upcycled into a fully functional desk lamp that earns its place in any serious interior.
The object
Strand Electric was the dominant force in British professional stage lighting for decades. Their fixtures lit the stages of theatres, television studios, and concert halls across the UK and Europe from the 1950s through the 1980s. The Patt 23 - also known as the "Pipo" was produced throughout the 1960s and became a fixture of the professional stage. The twin circular lenses that give it its nickname were not a stylistic choice. They were engineering: a precise optical system designed to project clean, controlled beams across large auditoria.
This lamp carried that work. It shows.
