The story

Philips made the HDK series in the Netherlands in the 1950s to light factories, warehouses and production halls. The cast-aluminium top once housed a heavy transformer; the deep enamel shade, white inside, throws the light straight down onto the work floor. Built purely for function, it became one of the defining silhouettes of Dutch industrial design.

The restoration

We stripped the aluminium top and refinished it in satin black, kept the original enamel shade and rewired the lamp. The heavy transformer has been removed.

In your interior

At this scale it works best above a dining table, kitchen island or restaurant counter, where a smaller pendant would disappear.
